Russia’s war on Ukraine. 22.02.2024

In the operational zone of the Ukrainian Operational-Strategic Group of Forces (OSG) “Khortytsia” on the Kupyansk direction, the enemy made 3 attempts to advance in the areas of Synkivka and Tabaivka, on the Lyman direction, they attacked Ukrainian units near Terny and Vyimka 6 times. On the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 2 enemy attacks in the areas of Klishchiivka and Mayorsk.

In the “Tavriya” OSG operational zone on the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 19 enemy attacks in the area of Stepove, Lastochkyne, Severne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske. On the Maryinka direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continued holding back the enemy  near Heorhiivka, Pobieda and Novomykhailivka, where the enemy attempted to breach Ukrainian troops’ defenses 14 times. On the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled an enemy attack south of Zolota Nyva. On the Zaporizhzhia direction, they repelled 8 enemy attacks west of Verbove and in the area of Robotyne.

In the operational zone of the “Odesa” OSG on the Kherson direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold positions and repel assaults by occupation forces. Despite significant losses, the adversary persists in attempts to dislodge Ukrainian units from their positions. Over the past day, the enemy made 4 unsuccessful assault attempts on the left bank of the Dnipro River.

General conclusion:

  • The enemy is attempting to establish and stabilize a new defensive line on the Avdiivka direction.
  • The capture of Pobieda allows the enemy to advance towards Vuhledar or to cut off logistic routes leading to Vuhledar.
  • Russian forces on the Orikhiv direction try to move in small infantry groups and on fast all-terrain vehicles, but their attacks on this direction are unsuccessful.

Change in the line of contact (LoC):  

  • There were 64 combat engagements on various fronts. “Tavria” OSG units withdrew to positions on the hills west of Pobieda on the Shakhtarsk direction.
  • On the Kupyansk direction, positional battles continued near Synkivka and Tabaivka.
  • On the Lyman direction, positional battles persisted near Terny, Torske, and Bilohorivka.
  • On the Bakhmut direction, positional battles continued in the areas of Vyimka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, and Klishchiivka. Russian forces are attempting to capture Ivanivske, where the 11th Separate Air Assault Brigade is advancing.
  • On the Avdiivka direction, Russian forces made slight progress towards the eastern outskirts of Lastochkyne. Positional battles persisted near Stepove, Lastochkyne, near Severne, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske.
  • On the Shakhtarsk direction, the 225th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 20th Motorized Rifle Division of the Russian 8th Army captured Pobieda, displacing the “Tavriya” OSG units from the village and taking control of a section of the O0532 Maryinka – Pobieda – Kostiantynivka road. Russian forces advanced to the southern outskirts of Krasnohorivka. Positional battles persisted in the areas near Heorhiivka, Pobieda, and Novomykhailivka.
  • Berdyansk direction: positional battles occurred near Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, and Novozlatopil. Russian forces advanced near Novodonetske.
  • Tokmak direction: Russian forces have advanced in the western part of Robotyne and west of Verbove. Near Novoprokopivka, the enemy has advanced up to 2 kilometers along the front and 500-600 meters in depth. Positional battles were ongoing near Verbove, Robotyne, and Mala Tokmachka.
  • Kherson direction: Russian forces have advanced towards Krynky, but “Odesa” OSG units maintain their positions in Krynky.
  • In the Black Sea-Azov naval operational area, the enemy naval group on combat duty consisted of:
    • Black Sea: 1 ship.
    • Azov Sea: 1 ship.
    • Mediterranean Sea: 2 ships, including 1 cruise missile carrier with the total salvo of 8 “Kalibr” missiles.

Change in enemy disposition: not detected.

Escalation indicators:

  • The enemy captured Pobieda village and gained the opportunity to advance towards Kostiantynivka and Vuhledar.

Possible operation situation developments:

  • The Russian Federation plans to seize the entire Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts and part of Kharkiv Oblast up to the Oskil River by March 2024. Over the next 36 months, Russia intends to capture parts of Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv Oblasts.
  • Russian forces may advance towards Kostiantynivka along Highway O0532 or towards Heorhiivka along Highway H15.

Humanitarian+general:

  • According to information provided by the Situation Center of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Russian troops shelled 11 regions of Ukraine over the past day. A total of 125 towns and villages and 94 infrastructure objects were attacked with various types of weapons. One person was reported killed and 8 were reported injured in different regions of Ukraine. The number of casualties is being updated/clarified.
  • Overnight on February 22, the Russian military launched ten Shahed-type UAVs at Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Defense successfully neutralized eight of them.
  • On February 22, Russian military forces attacked a thermal power plant near the front line, resulting in injuries to nine employees.
  • On February 22, at 10:10 AM, Russian forces shelled Kurakhove, Donetsk Oblast, using KAB-250 bombs. As a result of the airstrike on an industrial site, nine employees were injured, including two women and seven men aged 31 to 54.
  • According to the International Organization for Migration, in the two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over 14 million Ukrainians—nearly a third of the country’s population—have fled their homes.
  • Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russian Federation has launched over 8,000 missiles of all types at Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully neutralized 25 out of 78 “Kinzhals”, 406 out of 843 “Kalibrs”, and 1,176 out of 1,513 X-101/X-555 missiles, Yuriy Ihnat, the spokesperson of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said.
